About Bluestone and Basalt
BLUESTONE a hard limestone, with similar characteristics to Belgian Blue Stone.
It is dark blue/grey to black in colour with small white shells and fossils, which enhance its natural appearance and create a marble-like effect.Belgian Blue Stone is considered one of the best construction materials in Europe. Bluestone is not only one of the most compact natural sedimentary stones, it also has quite unique aesthetic properties. Apart from the distinctive appearance created by the white fossils, the finely dispersed carbon in the stone mass imbues it with striking tonal contrasts depending on the type of surface finish - from pale grey over dark blue, to shiny black. This bluestone will develop a beautiful patina over time that lends character to any situation.
Bluestone can be used indoors and out - for cladding, paving, window sills, stairs, coping, kitchen and bathroom counter tops, pool surrounds, garden edging, pavements and driveways, commercial and domestic floors, retaining walls and fire surrounds. Bluestone is frost resistant, will not absorb water, has a very high impact and scratch resistance and is highly resistant to permanent staining.
BASALT
Basalt is an extrusive volcanic rock produced by the rapid cooling of lava at the surface of the planet. Usually grey to black in colour it may be 'porphyritic', containing large crystals in a fine matrix, or 'vesicular' - a frothy 'scoria'. Porphyritic basalt is comparatively rich in iron and magnesium, low in silica and very dense. It is the most common type of rock making up the Earth's crust, and the ocean floor is almost completely made up of basalt.
Basalt has been used for the construction of roads and buildings, both civic and domestic, for centuries. It is an extremely versatile product that can be employed for:
* cobblestones and setts
* paving
* kerbing and garden edging
* pool coping and surrounds
* pavers
* steps and risers
* tiles - indoor & outdoor
* fireplace surrounds
* kitchen/bathroom bench tops
* table tops
Basalt is a strong, hard wearing material with exceptial performance characteristics, such as:
* abrasion resistance much greater than other natural stones
* high chemical resistance (to most chemicals) and very effective as a chemical resistant barrier
* natural sound proof material
* high anti-slip rating
* high scratch resistance
* frost resistant & distortion free
* non radioactive
* environmentally friendly
All of which equates to a product which is an ideal choice for indoor and outdoor use in commercial, residential, retail and civic projects.
